Inside the Strategic Plan — Focus Area 1: Communication

The Clearview Library District began the new year with the launch of the 2020-2022 Strategic Plan, which establishes a clear vision for serving the community and fulfilling our mission: Cultivate Curiosity. Enlighten the Mind. Strengthen the Community. In this four-part series, we’ll dive into each of the focus areas.

Through our extensive community engagement process for the 2020-2022 Strategic Plan, four common themes emerged from your feedback:

  1. Communication
  2. Partnerships
  3. Programs & Services
  4. Space

Community Feedback

“The community had a wide range of feedback about communication,” said strategic plan facilitator Sheryl Trent of S Brand. “Those community members and partners that were already familiar with the work and plans of the library indicated that the communication was informative, clear, and helpful. The feedback from community members who may not be as closely involved with library events and meetings gave us feedback that we needed to improve our communication with them.”  

In particular feedback placed an emphasis on wanting more communication from the library to not only understand all of our resources, but also the data behind decision making.

“The Advisory Group felt it was important to show all of the data and the decision-making process the library uses, especially when that data is used to inform and make significant community investments,” Trent said. “They also agreed that it would be important to have more physical outreach around communication.”

Future Plans

Starting this year, our vision for communication and outreach methods will be to provide clear, transparent, and patron-focused communication that enhances relationships and builds awareness of the important role the library plays in the community.

To meet this vision, the Advisory Group outlined two goals:

  1. Raise awareness regarding the opportunities and challenges of the library district with transparent and consistent messaging.
  2. Foster and maintain collaboration and support for communication efforts with all partners in the community.

“Communication is an important focus because people need to be aware of the services the library provides for citizens of all ages,” said Library Director Ann Kling. “The greatest challenge in communication is reaching people in the district in a way that meets their preferences.

“My hope is that through action items from our Advisory Group, that we find new avenues to collaborate, share our communications, and broaden our reach.”

Updates on the progress of plan initiatives will be presented to the Library Board of Trustees each quarter, as well as posted to the Strategic Plan webpage with all of the process documents.
