‘A Universe of Stories’ Looks to Promote Exploration and Reading

Summer is sure to be taken to new heights this year with the library’s space-themed Summer Adventure Program. From June 3 through August 9, the Summer Adventure Program will help promote a season of exploration and reading for all ages — from birth to 99 — with free programs and events.

The program will officially kick off at 3 p.m. Monday, June 3, with “Countdown to Blastoff,” complete with space food and crafts, an astronaut photo booth, and rocket launch for all ages.

“Our Summer Adventure Program theme this year is space, so we are especially looking forward to special programming that emphasizes astronomy,” said Public Services Manager Casey Lansinger-Pierce. “This summer marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, and we're using this special anniversary as inspiration for many of our summer programs.”

The season includes events for all ages, such as “Fly Me to the Moon” a presentation on the lunar landing with previously unseen footage; “Meteorites and Infrared Cameras,” a hands-on experience with CU Boulder’s Fiske Planetarium; and a teen “NERF Space Battle.”

Once registered, participants complete books and adventures at each level. When a level has been completed, participants can check-in for prizes. Completion of the Summer Adventure Program will earn you an entry to win the grand prizes — ranging from gift cards to a shaved ice machine. Grand prizes will be drawn for each age group on August 12.

“Summer is a time when priorities tend to shift a bit and fun and activity takes center stage,” Lansinger-Pierce said. “Our summer programs are designed to engage and encourage critical thinking, without feeling too much like formal school, all while promoting a strong sense of community.

“The program is easy and doable! All you need to do is read and go on adventures. We're here to help make your summer special.”
